Beginning the week of April 27, 2026, the Forest Service will begin construction activities associated with the cleanup of an abandoned mine near Cherry, Arizona, on the Verde Ranger District of the Prescott National Forest in Yavapai County. The Gold Bullion Mine once produced primarily gold and chalcopyrite, but operations appear to have ceased before the 1940s. Since then, mine waste has migrated offsite into the surrounding environment, contributing to poor watershed quality and posing potential risks to human health and wildlife.
