New I-17 Flex Lanes Open for Temporary Northbound Detour Near Black Canyon City

Drivers heading north on Interstate 17 through Black Canyon City will notice major changes starting May 5, as construction crews advance work on the 23-mile I-17 Improvement Project between Anthem Way and Sunset Point. Northbound traffic will temporarily shift into two newly constructed flex lanes—part of Arizona’s first-ever flex lane corridor—allowing work to continue on the existing northbound lanes, bridges, and infrastructure. This shift marks a critical step toward completing the 6 million project aimed at widening I-17 and easing traffic congestion in one of the state’s busiest travel corridors.
